I November 1997, about 13 people met in St. Paul, Virginia to discuss the possibility of starting a new bank. The thinking at that time was if we could get 30 people to invest, we would give it a try. A week later another meeting was held before a full house at the Honaker Fire Hall. Instead of having 30 interested stockholders, there were hundreds by the spring of 1998. The first bank was opened in Honaker, Virginia on October 28, 1998. Today there are 29 banks with more than 4,800 stockholders and total assets of over $600,000,000.

Today there are branches in Honaker, Castlewood, Weber City, Haysi, Lebanon, Pounding Mill, Princeton, Gate City, Clintwood, Big Stone Gap, Tazewell, Davenport, Grundy, Dungannon, Kingsport, Bristol, Richlands, Abingdon, Wise, Pound, Bristol Commonwealth, Bluefield, Cleveland, Jonesborough, Jonesville , Bramwell, Chilhowie, Norton & Pennington Gap. Plans are in the mill to locate branches in Chilhowie, Bland, Bluefield and Piney Flats.
